FPA CA Sacramento Advocacy Day

Financial Planning as a profession is at a critical juncture. New laws, rules and regulations concerning our profession are being put into place across the country, with or without the input of Financial Planners.
While the Legislators’ intentions of protecting investors from predators may come from a good place, some of the proposals will have unintended consequences.
The Financial Planning Association of California asks you to step up and join our advocacy efforts to let legislators and regulators know FPA opinions on proposed legislation and our profession.
We are going to Sacramento on March 12, 2024. This is our 12th annual visit to “the Hill”. I urge you to join your fellow FPA members from around the state to meet with your elected representatives.

FPA of California events will comply with the current Local, State and Federal requirements.

Why is your participation important?  Without you (a constituent who lives in the district) we are unable to meet with your Senator or Assembly member. We must comment on current bills and policies that are most important to Financial Planners and help protect our clients. These conversations will help determine the future of our profession. These meetings help us build strong relationships with elected officials and their staff. Please mark your calendar now to participate in a fun and exciting day in support of our profession.

To register for the March 12, 2024, Advocacy Day, please complete the registration form REGISTER HERE
Note: You will need to supply the names and contact information for your Senator and Assemblymember by February 23rd. To find out who they are, HERE is a link to find your California elected official based on your district of residence (once on their website, click on the Contact Us tab)

March 11, 2024: You are invited to join us in Sacramento on Monday night. FPA of California is hosting a dinner for all Advocacy Day participants at The Rio City Café, on the Riverwalk near the Embassy Suites.
To register to attend the March 11, 2024, Dinner at the Rio City Cafe, please click HERE.

There is also have a block of rooms at a discounted rate at the Embassy Suites – available on a first come, first served basis for members who need to arrive Monday night to be ready for the 7:00am Tuesday morning training meeting.  To book your hotel, please use one of the methods below.
Please note that in order to get the reduced rate you will need to make your reservations by February 23rd as the hotel sells out every year. Please be sure to edit your hotel dates to indicate your stay from 3/11 to 3/12.

Please keep in mind that all reservations must be in by: February 23, 2024.

March 12, 2024: We meet in the Embassy Suites near the Capitol and Riverwalk for a hosted breakfast and orientation at 7:00am. Then we head to the Capitol for visits with our State Senators and/or Assembly Members.

Are you new to Advocacy?  Not to worry, we usually send 2 to 3 members to each legislator office to meet in a tag team approach. You will have a team to support you.

We offer FINANCIAL SUPPORT. The FPA of California is committed to helping our members engage in Advocacy Day on behalf of the Financial Planning Association. While we are asking you to take a day off work and volunteer your time, we are pleased to be able to defer some of the travel and hotel costs (available to the first 30 members who register to join us in Sacramento.) For specifics on the financial support available this year, please speak to your chapter Director of Advocacy.

Register now to participate in a powerful and exciting day participating in the democratic process in support of our profession. We look forward to another successful Advocacy Day!

2024 Economic and Fed Policy Outlook

Presented by Jeffrey Cleveland, Director, Chief Economist and World Class Open-Water Endurance Swimmer*;
Payden & Rygel

Economic conditions remain uncertain as we look ahead to 2024. There is no playbook for economies coming out of a pandemic. The Federal Reserve is resolute in their assault on inflation, but that tells us little about what to expect going forward. Join us in January as Jeffrey Cleveland will review the economic conditions we’ll be facing in 2024 and beyond. Cleveland is the Chief Economist at Payden & Rygel where he leads the management of $120 Billion. He will look at the major economic factors, discuss risks on the horizon, and focus upon Fed policy. He will give us lots of great information to share with our clients this year.

About the Speaker
Jeffrey Cleveland is a Director and the Chief Economist at Payden & Rygel. He is responsible for developing views on the US and global economy and the capital market implications.

Jeffrey earned a MA in International Political Economy with an emphasis in international money and finance from Claremont Graduate University and a BA in Economics/Global Political Economy from Whittier College through the Whittier Scholars Program.

*As an avid open-water swimmer, Jeffrey swam across the English Channel in September 2008, across the Catalina Channel in 2009, and around Manhattan in 2010, becoming the 36th person to have completed this “triple crown” of open water swimming.

Presented by Dr. Meghaan Lurtz; Kitces.Com
and
Professor of Practice at Kansas State University

Asking great questions is an essential part of the job of the financial advisor. Great questions help us to gather important information, and great questions can help motivate clients to take action. Many advisors are aware of the difference between a closed-ended question and an open-ended question, but questions can take additional forms as well. Learn not only about the different types of questions that are available to advisors, but also about how and when to use these questions throughout the financial planning relationship.

About the Speaker:
Meghaan Lurtz, Ph.D., FBS™ is a Professor of Practice at Kansas State University where she teaches courses for the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate Program, a lecturer at Columbia University where she teaches Financial Psychology, and an on-staff writer and researcher of financial psychology at Kitces.com

Her research interests vary as she studies both practitioners of financial planning as well as financial planning and financial therapy practices and interventions.

She has also contributed chapters to the CFP Board’s textbook, Client Psychology. Meghaan is a past President and current board member for the Financial Therapy Association and Financial Psychology Institute Europe.

October 12 NexGen Hosted Zoom Meeting

October 12 NexGen Hosted Zoom

Each year, Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans can change significantly for the coming year.  In fact, while the plans will keep the same names year to year, EVERYTHING ELSE about that coverage could change including monthly premiums, the medications they cover (or do not cover), pharmacy networks, doctor networks, out-of-pocket costs, deductibles and more.

Yes. You could have entirely different coverage next year from a plan with the same name. As a result, it’s critical that all senior-aged clients review their plan options during Medicare’s Open Enrollment period (October 15 and December 7). Yet only 20%-30% of seniors review their Medicare coverage. Plus, with additional changes coming to Medicare from the Inflation Reduction Act, it’s critical to get a preview of how Medicare will change for your clients. In this session, Melinda will teach you how to save your clients serious money on Medicare during Open Enrollment — without having to become a Medicare expert or sell insurance.

Presented by: Melinda Caughill; 65 Incorporated

Melinda is a passionate and entertaining Medicare expert. For more than 15 years, Melinda has worked in the Medicare landscape – helping to provide seniors, as well as their families and trusted advisors, with the unbiased guidance they need to avoid costly, permanent mistakes. She’s been a featured presenter for many financial advisory firms, including AG, Allstate, Edward Jones, Financial Experts Network, LPL, Raymond James, and more. Her Medicare insights have been featured in publications like Wall Street Journal, Consumer Reports, Morningstar. She’s consulted with prominent corporations like PBS and MacMillan Publishing. Today, through her companies, 65 Incorporated and i65, Melinda uses her extensive experience to provide seniors with unbiased, individualized Medicare enrollment guidance through fee-for-service consultations and online software. Melinda does not, nor do her companies, sell Medicare insurance.
