Event Recap: Trump Accounts (§530A Accounts)

Exploring a New Tax-Deferred Savings Opportunity for Families

On August 12, financial planners, tax professionals, and other financial services professionals from across the East Bay gathered at Orinda Country Club for a timely discussion on Trump Accounts (§530A Accounts) and what this new savings vehicle could mean for families and financial planning strategies.

Hosted by FPA East Bay, the program featured nationally recognized tax and financial planning expert Lawrence Pon of Pon & Associates, who provided attendees with a practical look at how these new accounts work and where they may fit alongside other established savings and investment strategies.

Understanding Trump Accounts

With a new financial planning tool comes plenty of questions. Lawrence helped attendees better understand the structure of Trump Accounts, their tax treatment, and the opportunities they may create for parents, grandparents, employers, and financial professionals.

The session explored several important topics, including:

  • Key features and requirements of Trump Accounts (§530A Accounts)

  • Tax treatment of contributions and distributions

  • How Trump Accounts compare with 529 Plans, Roth IRAs, and UTMA Accounts

  • Potential rollover and Roth conversion opportunities

  • Strategies for building long-term wealth for children and families

  • How the accounts may complement education and retirement planning strategies

Drawing on nearly four decades of experience in tax and financial planning, Lawrence helped translate a new and evolving area of tax law into practical considerations financial professionals can use when evaluating strategies for their clients.

Why This Matters for Financial Planning

One of the key takeaways from the session was that understanding a new account is about more than learning its contribution limits and tax rules. Advisors also need to understand how it fits within a client’s broader financial plan.

Families already have several options for saving and investing for children, each with different tax implications, ownership structures, restrictions, and long-term planning considerations. The introduction of Trump Accounts adds another option for advisors to evaluate.

Understanding how these accounts interact with established planning tools can help financial professionals have more informed conversations with clients and determine when a new strategy may, or may not, make sense for a family’s goals.

Staying Ahead of Changes in Tax Planning

Tax laws and financial planning opportunities continue to evolve, making ongoing education especially important for advisors, CPAs, and other professionals serving families.

The session reinforced the value of staying current on legislative changes while carefully evaluating how new strategies fit within each client’s individual circumstances.

For attendees, the program provided an opportunity to move beyond the headlines and gain a more practical understanding of how Trump Accounts could affect future conversations around saving, education, retirement, and multigenerational wealth planning.
